Decide whether you would like to join the competitive or casual side of the club. You can switch whenever
Competitive: Pay $30 entrance fee, commit to required volunteer hours, attend required number of practices and meetings
Casual: no fees, explore local trails, build bike skills, participate in community events, join group rides, volunteer, participate in non-collegiate races (community races), nothing is required to be a part of the casual side of the club. Casual club members will not benefit from club deals or sponsorships.
Fill out the required forms found in the forms table on our website
Check the calendar and come to an event or ride (on our website, slack or Instagram)
You are officially a club member!!
There are no tryouts or requirements to be a part of the club! Everyone is welcome to come to group rides and team events. If you are planning to race, we do require you to come to at least 2 practices before every race, pay the $30 fee, attend 3 racing events a year, and volunteer a certain amount of hours a year (volunteer hours TBD by MSU club sports) .
MSU cycling has a large community of awesome people looking to ride bikes on a casual level. There are no fees or requirements needed to join the non-racing group, just a good attitude! This side focuses on exploring the Bozeman area, improving skills, and meeting people with similar interests. There will be a lot of overlap between the racing and non-racing sides. All events, community races, volunteering, group rides, and events are open to both racing and non-racing
$30 a year if you want to race competitively. This gives you exclusive access to club benefits such as sponsor deals and race entree fees.
Yes, the club pays for collegiate race entries. Local race entries will not be paid for.
Required practices will be held one day a week for all disciplines. These will vary in what they look like from discipline to discipline, although they will be more of a 'recovery' style ride. There will be more practice opportunities, however these will not be required.
Yes! Twice a month in conjunction with Backcountry Squatters Club a girls' only ride rips around Bozeman!!
We use a system of carpooling and a club owned seven person bike rack that can be used to transport bikes. (2" receiver needed for the rack) The person driving the bike race or practice has to check-in and out the bike rack in the forms tab
Club sports are organizations created by students, that compete competitively with other University clubs, but are not sponsored by University Athletic Programs or regulated by the NCAA. They allow students to continue competing in sports that may not be offered at a collegiate level. Full-time professional staff in the Campus Recreation department oversees all Club Sports from an administrative standpoint. The cycling club leadership is responsible for coordinating all of our day-to-day activities, travel, fundraising, and volunteering. The Campus Rec office assists with any finances allocated (some money) to clubs by the University and with travel and safety compliance. Essentially lot of the requirements and fees cycling clubs implement come from the For more questions go to Club Sports FAQs - Club Sports | Montana State University
We work closely with community partners that can help! Bike shops like Owenhouse Cycles are a great place to purchase new bikes (racing members get a discount on new bikes at Owenhouse). We also work with the Bozeman Community Bike Kitchen. At the Bike Kitchen, bikes are donated by community members to be fixed and resold. You can purchase used bikes at the Bike Kitchen at greatly discounted rates. You can also use their volunteer and build a bike program as a cheaper option.
Montana State Outdoor Rec Center, close to Roskie Hall Bison lot. This is where our town ride or carpooling will start from
Mountain bike - fall semester, some event ride in the spring
Cyclo-cross - fall semester and winter break
Road - spring semester, rides will be held in the fall too
Montana State collegiate race disciplines include Cross-country, Short track, Dual Slalom, and Downhill (there is a team relay at nationals)
We are waiting on US cycling to post their collegiate national qualification system, however if you email Kyle Knott, the race coordinator nationalevents@usacycling.org he will be able to let you know if you are eligible or not base on the races you have done.
Not exactly. However, MSU club sports will provide an official proof of travel form for all athletes traveling with the club. These can be sent to professors as proof of absence. THESE DO NOT EXCUSE YOUR ABSENCE!!!!!!! In most cases however professors are more than willing to accommodate the absence. PLEASE GET THESE FORMS TO YOUR PROFESSORS MORE THAN A WEEK IN ADVANCE!!!
Jerseys are encouraged for everyone but not required. If you are going to compete at collegiate level, yes you do need one! This way we can support our local sponsors and get their names out there. The more people representing Montana State Cycling and our sponsors the better!!
=Link will be sent to competitive members via email, slack and they can reach out if needed.
President - oversees all disciplines, funding, events, races, rides, and sponsors; delegates tasks between rest of leadership
Vice President - helps out the president and focuses on specific races and events to plan
Downhill coordinator - fills out travel forms for downhill races, organizes transportation and accommodation for those races, registers athletes for races, and works very closely with the cross-country coordinator
CrossCountry coordinator - fills out travel forms for XC races, organizes transportation and accommodation for those races, registers athletes for races, and works very closely with the downhill coordinator
Road/Gravel coordinator - fills out travel forms for road races, organizes transportation and accommodation for those races, plans group rides/events, and registers athletes for races
Social Media Manager - Maintains the club's presence on Instagram and socials.
Ride Leaders - Decide what trail or rotate to take a group on. Responsible for the saddle bag and first aid kit, diving up riders based on ability if necessary, and making sure people get back safe. Ride leaders don't have to go to every ride just the one they lead. Ride leaders will need to lead two rides a season in the discipline they prefer. This is a perfect role for people who don't what a lot of commitment but a leadership position.
All leadership members except for ride leaders (ride leaders + leadership meet monthly to plan rides) will be asked to attend a weekly meeting and complete tasks in a timely manner. These roles are flexible based on people's strengths.
